限られた国土と資源で世界に生きるシンガポールは、非常に合理的な方法を選ぶ。国の未来を国民にヴィジュアルに提案し、段階的に数１０年先のヴィジョンまでを見せる。そしてそれは外国人にさえ開かれている。このような拓かれた提案は国民の実生活へも及び、動植物園や芸術などの文化的な展開まで及んでいる。
Singapore has few countries and resources also in the world. Therefore, this country chooses a very rational method. The future of a country is proposed intelligibly for people and the future several ten years after is shown gradually.

また同国は移民の国であり、民族の多種多様性を受け入れてきた。かつては対立の多かった価値観も長い年月の教育により、相互理解を勝ち取った。それは民族や宗教の壁を越え、国土の狭い国でも互いに存在できるものとなった。教育による相互理解の徹底振りは、これからの世界の在り方の鍵となるのではないだろうか。

貿易会社のTayさんご夫婦のお世話になり、シンガポールの過去、現在、未来までを教えていただくことができた。「私たちの国を知って欲しい」と様々な場所を案内していただいた。その国を理解し、互いの文化を理解する。三ヶ国語で日常会話をするTayさんご夫婦には、お人柄もさることながら、諭されるところが多々あった。このように世界と関係を築くため、渡航を繰り返すのだ。

慣れない半袖で過ごす１２月のクリスマスは、思いのほか違和感がなかった。メインの大通りでは、街を彩るイルミネーションに、多くの人々が思い思いの幸せを体現しているように見えた。世界にはたくさんの幸せの形がある。どの国も固有の問題を抱えるが、だからこそ勝ち得た豊かさがあるのではないだろうか。南国の街路樹で緑に溢れ、スパイシーなカレーも本格中華も味わうことができるこの国は、それぞれの文化を尊重した、次世代の方法論があるように思えた。しわくちゃのガイドブックを片手に、もう一度私は、この地を尋ねるのだろう。
